In 2006, the “Optimization Design and Prototype Development of Evaporative Cooling Hydrogenerators of 800 MW Level†was listed by the Ministry of Science and Technology as one of the “Eleventh Five-Year†National Science and Technology Support Program. The Three Gorges Corporation participated in the whole process as a user, and decided to manufacture two units, which were installed in the underground powerhouse of the Three Gorges Power Station.
From February 12 to 13, the Three Gorges Corporation organized a design meeting and research content review meeting in Deyang, Sichuan. More than 50 academicians, experts and engineers and technicians of the engineering institutes participating in the domestic research and design, manufacturing and operation of the conference, the results of the simulation calculation of the motor evaporative cooling system and the selection and testing of key components submitted by the electrician; The electromagnetic design, structural design and manufacturing and process proposals submitted by the company were thoroughly reviewed. It is agreed that the overall plan is feasible and the results are credible, and basically have the basis and conditions for project implementation.
The project will sign a business contract in the near future, thus officially kicking off the evaporative cooling technology and embarking on the development of a large-capacity hydro-generator. According to the plan, two 840 MVA evaporative cooling hydro-generators will be completed by the end of 2009 and will be connected to the grid for power generation in mid-2010.
