Australian researchers release the world's first 3D printed jet engine

According to British media reports on February 26, Australian researchers released the world's first 3D printed jet engine on the 26th. This breakthrough in manufacturing technology may result in a more economical, lighter and fuel-efficient jet aircraft. Engineers at Monash University and its commercial unit are making top-secret engine prototypes for Boeing, Airbus, Raytheon and Safran, a technology that is expected to save Australia's faltering manufacturing sector.

"This allows the aerospace industry to compress the development cycle because we build these engine prototypes three to four times faster than normal production," said Simon Marriott, CEO of Amaero Engineering. Amaero Engineering is a private company founded by Monash University to commercialize the product. Marriott said Amaero plans to bring 3D print engine components into flight testing within the next 12 months and put it into commercial use in two to three years.

Australia has the potential to monopolize this market with one of the only three large, large-format 3D metal printers in the world - the other two are owned by France and Germany and Australia is the only one in the world that can make the machine Material country. Australia is also a world leader in the intellectual property of 3D printing.

Marriott, based on trade secrets, declined to comment in detail about the details of the contract between Amaero and companies such as Boeing and Airbus. These contracts are expected to partially pay for the manufacturing of more large-format printers to boost the manufacturing of jet aircraft components. The manufacturing cost of each of these printers is about 3.5 million Australian dollars (about 17.3 million yuan).

3D printing cuts part production time from three months to just six days. According to Ian Smith, associate dean of Mona University, 3D printing is very different from melting, molding and engraving in the past. "With 3D printing, we can quickly make a final product, so the benefits of this technology start with a quick prototyping and rapid prototyping in high volume," Smith said. "The second is to make custom parts that we can not make using conventional engineering techniques."
