For several months, we've been closely following the evolving discussions between the Village of Barrington and the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) about their ongoing relationship. You can read our previous coverage here, here, here, here, and here.
Recently, *The Daily Herald* reported that the Barrington Countryside FPD is actively seeking to hire new personnel, signaling a major shift in how emergency services are managed in the area.
According to Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District trustees, the debate over their proposed year-end separation from the Barrington Fire Department has moved from theoretical discussions to real action — from "why?" to "how?"
This means the district, which operates as a separate taxing authority, is now beginning the process of acquiring its own staff and equipment rather than relying on contracts with the village.
District President Tom Rowan confirmed that requests for proposals have already been sent out to recruit 33 employees, including a chief, who will be ready to take over operations from the current Barrington Fire Department staff starting January 1st.
Originally, the Barrington Fire Department was established to serve only the village of Barrington. However, the fire district covers a larger area just outside the village, including parts of Barrington Hills, Inverness, Lake Barrington, South Barrington, and unincorporated portions of Cook, Lake, and McHenry counties.
Fire Station 1 in Barrington will remain under the jurisdiction of the Barrington Fire Department, but a split would mean the fire district takes control of Station 2 in Barrington Hills and Station 3.
The agreement between the two agencies outlines an even division of shared equipment, which will begin with a coin flip, according to Rowan.
A notice of the contract's termination on December 31, 2013, was issued last fall after district trustees expressed frustration with the village’s failure to meet their staffing and equipment needs.
However, Barrington Village President Karen Darch recently stated that she still believes the relationship can be repaired and that there is enough time left to address any remaining issues.
Despite this, Rowan remains convinced that the final step left is simply deciding whether to call “heads†or “tails†to begin the equipment division.
