One year ago, Flyability introduced its groundbreaking drone, the Elios 2. Since then, we've been eager to hear from users about how this innovative tool has impacted their work. In this article, we take a closer look at the progress made in industrial drone use throughout 2019 and share initial feedback from industries, users, and pilots who have been using the Elios 2 in real-world conditions.
**2019 – A Turning Point for Robotics in Industrial Inspections**
Looking back, 2019 was a pivotal year for robotics in inspections. More and more large industrial companies began integrating drones into their operations, recognizing the benefits of safer, faster, and more cost-effective solutions. As reported by Bloomberg in an article titled *Drones Do Deadly Work So You Don’t Have To*, companies like Dow, At&T, BASF, and Shell are now using drones to keep workers out of dangerous environments while significantly cutting inspection costs.
We're especially proud of the impact drones are having in confined space inspections. For example, Dow eliminated over 1,000 confined space entries using robotics, and LafargeHolcim included drones as a key component of its “Plants of Tomorrow†initiative.
For Flyability, 2019 marked the launch of the Elios 2, a drone designed for a wide range of indoor applications. It’s built to empower even new users to feel like experienced pilots. The Elios 2 represents a major leap forward in indoor inspection robotics, with features such as oblique lighting, distance lock, and intuitive controls, all developed based on direct feedback from inspectors across various industries.
**2020 and Beyond – Real-World Success Stories from Our Customers**
Over the past year, many of our customers have shared inspiring stories about how the Elios 2 is transforming their inspection processes.
**Oil & Gas / Maritime**
Bureau Veritas France used the Elios 2 to inspect a ballast tank for Total. The results were impressive: a safer, faster inspection with high-quality HD images available after the mission.
**Power Generation**
Exelon Clearsight used the Elios 2 to reduce time spent in a radioactive and hazardous environment. The drone cut inspection time from two days to just four hours. They also used it to inspect a coal power station’s filtration system, completing the task in 8 hours instead of 120 using traditional methods.
**Maritime**
MFE Rentals conducted a ballast tank inspection using the Elios 2. One pilot completed the task in three 10-minute flights, whereas traditionally it would have required three to four inspectors with extensive safety gear.
**Indoor Photogrammetry – Mining & Beyond**
UAS Inc., a mining inspection company, used the Elios 2 for underground photogrammetry. Many users praise the drone for its ability to perform detailed scans in dark and GPS-denied environments.
**Drone Usage and Development**
Our survey of 250 Elios 1 and 2 users revealed that 45% conduct 2–5 missions per month, while 41% do fewer than two. Despite this, the majority of users expect significant growth in the next five years, with 85% planning to increase indoor drone inspections and 73% looking to expand their drone fleets.
