Of interest … Cancer in the Fire Service

Excerpts from thedrum.com:

DetecTogether, a nonprofit organization focused on early cancer detection and prevention, has launched a national education campaign aimed at firefighters. The initiative is backed by data from the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, which highlights that occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths in the fire service. In fact, firefighters are 14% more likely to die from cancer than the general population.

Despite these alarming statistics, DetecTogether has taken a creative and engaging approach by showcasing the hidden talents of firefighters—particularly their musical and dance abilities. The campaign features Jason Patton, a firefighter and paramedic known for his popular "Fire Department Chronicles" series with nearly 2 million social media followers. He's joined by members of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) in a series of fun, lighthearted videos filmed at the FDNY training academy on Randall’s Island.

"Our jobs are incredibly serious," Patton said. "Lives are on the line every day. But when we're not on duty, we like to have some fun. That's exactly what DetecTogether's campaign does—it uses humor to encourage firefighters to take action against cancer."

The public service announcement (PSA) also introduces firefighters to DetecTogether’s “3 Steps Detect” program, a simple roadmap for early cancer detection. The steps include:

  1. Know Your Great: Understand what 'great' feels like for your personal health.
  2. Use the 2-Week Rule: Seek medical attention if you notice persistent subtle changes in your health for two weeks.
  3. Share With Your Doctor: Don’t hesitate to discuss any health changes, even if they feel uncomfortable or embarrassing.

The campaign was developed in collaboration with a Chicago-based ad agency and builds upon DetecTogether’s existing “Response Time Matters” initiative. It aims to raise awareness while keeping the tone positive and relatable for those in the fire service.

The project received support from several key partners, including EMW-2021-FP-00573, 1A Auto, Last Call Foundation, Powertech Controls, the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY), the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, and the Center for Fire, Rescue & EMS Research.

A second video in the campaign uses humor to engage viewers further. In one scene, Patton playfully teases his colleague, O’Malley, while holding a dummy. This lighthearted approach helps break down barriers and makes the message about cancer prevention more accessible and memorable.

By blending entertainment with education, DetecTogether is helping firefighters take control of their health in a way that feels both meaningful and fun. Their efforts show that even in high-stress professions, it’s possible to spread important messages through creativity and connection.

Food Pulverizer

A spice pulverizer is a machine that is designed to grind and crush various spices into fine powders. It typically consists of a spice crusher and a spice grinder, both of which work together to break down the spices and turn them into a smooth and consistent powder. The spice crusher is responsible for breaking down the larger pieces of spice into smaller, more manageable chunks, while the spice grinder takes those smaller pieces and grinds them into a fine powder. This machine is ideal for use in commercial kitchens or spice shops, where large quantities of spices need to be ground quickly and efficiently. With a spice pulverizer, chefs and home cooks alike can enjoy the full flavor and aroma of their favorite spices in every dish.
