Of interest … Cancer in the Fire Service

Excerpts from thedrum.com:

DetecTogether, a non-profit organization focused on early cancer detection and prevention, has launched a national education campaign specifically targeting firefighters. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the heightened risk of occupational cancer among those in the fire service.

The campaign is based on data from the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, which shows that cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths for firefighters. In fact, they are 14% more likely to die from cancer than the general population. These sobering statistics highlight the urgent need for awareness and proactive measures.

Despite the gravity of the issue, DetecTogether chose a creative and lighthearted approach to engage firefighters. The campaign features videos showcasing the hidden talents of first responders—like musical skills and dance moves. One standout is Jason Patton, a firefighter and paramedic known for his popular "Fire Department Chronicles" series with nearly 2 million followers. He appears alongside other FDNY members in a video filmed at the FDNY training academy on Randall’s Island.

"Our jobs are incredibly serious," Patton said. "Lives are on the line every day. But between calls, we like to have some fun. That's exactly what this campaign does—it uses humor to encourage firefighters to take action against cancer."

In addition to being entertaining, the public service announcement (PSA) introduces firefighters to DetecTogether's '3 Steps Detect' roadmap for early cancer detection. The process includes:

  1. Know Your Great: Understand what 'great' feels like for your personal health.
  2. Use the 2-Week Rule: Seek medical attention if you notice persistent subtle changes in your health for two weeks or more.
  3. Share With Your Doctor: Discuss any health changes—even if they feel uncomfortable or embarrassing.

This simple yet powerful approach empowers firefighters to be more proactive about their health without delay.

The second video in the campaign continues the humorous tone, with Patton playfully teasing his colleague, O’Malley, while holding a dummy. This lighthearted approach helps make the message more relatable and memorable for firefighters.

The campaign was developed by a Chicago-based ad agency and builds upon DetecTogether’s existing “Response Time Matters” initiative. It has received support from several key partners, including EMW-2021-FP-00573, 1A Auto, Last Call Foundation, Powertech Controls, the FDNY, the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, and the Center for Fire, Rescue & EMS Research.

By combining humor with critical health messaging, DetecTogether is making a meaningful impact in the fight against firefighter cancer—one step at a time.
