Prospect Heights Achieves ISO Class 3

The JournalOnline recently published an article highlighting the Prospect Heights Fire District's recent achievement of an ISO Class 3 rating, marking a significant improvement after more than 15 years. This is a rare accomplishment, as only 7% of Illinois communities and 4% nationwide have reached this level. Fire Chief Donald Gould expressed his satisfaction with the results, stating that the new rating will help residents and local businesses enjoy lower fire insurance costs. "We are extremely pleased with the outcome of the ISO evaluation," he said. "This reflects the hard work and dedication of our team and will benefit our community in meaningful ways." ISO evaluates fire protection services across the country using a comprehensive rating system. Their assessments help insurance companies determine appropriate premiums for homes and businesses based on the quality of fire protection available in each area. The organization assigns a Public Protection Classification (PPC) to fire departments, ranging from 1 to 10, with 1 being the best and 10 indicating that the department does not meet minimum standards. The rating considers three key areas: alarm response (10%), the fire department itself (50%), and water supply (40%). The last time the Prospect Heights Fire District was rated by ISO was in 1996, when it received a Class 4. Since then, the district has made several improvements, particularly in alarm handling and overall operations, according to Chief Gould. He noted that they were just four points away from achieving a Class 2 rating. However, one of the main challenges remains the water supply system, which makes up 40% of the rating. In Prospect Heights, about 45% of the population relies on private wells for drinking water, and these areas lack adequate water for firefighting. As a result, the fire department often has to depend on tanker trucks, long hose lines to distant hydrants, or assistance from neighboring communities. This updated rating reflects the district’s ongoing efforts to enhance its services and better serve the community. The full article can be read HERE.
