Late Friday night, firefighters from Des Plaines responded to a fire at 555 Leahy Circle East. Upon arrival, they discovered a basement fire that had already escalated into a working fire. The dispatch had already alerted them to hoarder conditions at the home, which was confirmed by the first arriving officer as they checked the exterior. The residents were safely outside, and firefighters faced challenges entering the structure due to the cluttered environment.
Before the crews could fully enter, several vent holes were cut in the roof. Due to the difficult access and the spread of the fire to the second floor, the decision was made to withdraw and take a defensive approach. Fire lines were directed through windows and doorways, but reaching the source of the fire remained challenging because of the extensive debris.
The incident was upgraded to a Box Alarm to bring in more resources after personnel were pulled from the interior. Eventually, the fire was allowed to burn until it became visible and accessible from the outside. Once that happened, crews re-entered and attacked the flames with a tower ladder positioned above the house. A ground-level master stream was used through the front door and living room before the ladder was properly placed for access to the fire that had vented through the roof. Hand lines were deployed on all sides of the building.
By 4:00 AM, the bulk of the fire was under control, though crews continued to work on the scene for several more hours. All Des Plaines fire units were present, along with mutual aid from Prospect Heights, Mount Prospect, North Maine FPD, Elk Grove Township FPD, Wheeling, Park Ridge, Chicago Squad 7, Rosemont, Bensenville, and Glenview.
Numerous photos captured the intensity of the fire, showing heavy smoke pouring from windows, flames engulfing the house, and the chaotic aftermath of the hoarder conditions. These images provide a visual record of the dangerous and complex situation that firefighters faced during the response.
