Box Alarm house fire in Des Plaines, 8-16-19

Firefighters from Des Plaines responded to a serious fire at a residence on Leahy Circle East late Friday night. Upon arrival, the scene was already showing signs of a developing fire in the basement. As units were en route, the alarm was upgraded to a working fire due to visible flames. The dispatch had previously noted that the home was in a hoarder condition, a detail confirmed by the first arriving officer who surveyed the exterior. Residents had already evacuated the property, and firefighters faced challenges entering the structure due to the cluttered environment. To gain access, crews made vent holes in the roof before being ordered to withdraw and adopt a defensive strategy. The fire had spread from the basement to the second floor, with significant damage reported on the first level as well. Despite efforts to attack the fire using hand lines through windows and doorways, progress was hindered by the extensive debris. After pulling personnel from the interior, the incident was escalated to a Box Alarm to bring in more resources. Firefighters then allowed the blaze to burn until it became visible and accessible from the outside. A tower ladder was deployed, with a master stream applied from the ground level through the front door and living room. Once positioned above the house, the ladder provided access to the fire area that had vented through the roof. Hand lines were used around the entire structure to contain the flames. By 4:00 AM, the bulk of the fire was under control, but crews remained on-site for several more hours to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. Multiple fire departments from surrounding areas, including Prospect Heights, Mount Prospect, North Maine, Elk Grove Township, Wheeling, Park Ridge, Chicago Squad 7, Rosemont, Bensenville, and Glenview, provided mutual aid support. Numerous photos captured the intensity of the fire, showing heavy smoke pouring from windows, flames engulfing the house, and the dramatic impact of the hoarder conditions on the fire's spread. These images highlight the challenges faced by emergency responders during this difficult incident.
