Heavy-duty truck market in 2009 will have a weaker demand for diesel engines or will decline

On December 28, Cao Hongxin, President of the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, addressed the Third Forum on Chinese Medicine Development and highlighted four key challenges hindering the innovation and development of TCM. He emphasized that the ability to innovate based on clinical practice needs significant improvement. Additionally, there is a need to systematically excavate, organize, and refine the knowledge, methods, and techniques found in ancient medical texts. The integration of traditional Chinese medicine with modern science and technology remains an ongoing task, as does the further development and promotion of TCM treatment technologies. Cao also pointed out that as TCM continues to modernize, it has become a vital industry in many regions, playing a crucial role in national economic growth. In 2007, the total output value of TCM decoction pieces and proprietary medicines reached 179.626 billion yuan, making up 31% of the pharmaceutical industry's overall output. The global trend toward natural health solutions has increased international recognition of TCM’s benefits. Over 160 countries now use traditional Chinese medicine and related products, with nearly 4 billion people utilizing herbal remedies. China has established intergovernmental collaborations with France, Russia, Italy, South Korea, and others, and even included TCM in the Sino-US strategic cooperation framework in 2008. Facing both domestic and international opportunities and challenges, Cao stressed that enhancing independent innovation must be a core strategy for the future of TCM. He called for adherence to the fundamental principles of TCM innovation, focusing on disease prevention and treatment as the foundation, while prioritizing the enhancement of innovative capabilities. The “Six in One” approach was proposed as a model for comprehensive, coordinated, and sustainable development aimed at improving human health. To achieve these goals, Cao encouraged the advancement of three major projects—Yanhuang, Zhongjing, and Shizhen—which are pivotal in the research and development of TCM. These initiatives require deeper exploration of systems and mechanisms. He also urged the establishment of robust information and data research platforms, as well as stronger international cooperation and exchange networks. At the forum, Li Zhenji, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, delivered a speech titled “Strategic Thinking on the Construction of International Standardization of Traditional Chinese Medicine.” The event was organized by the China International Medical Exchange Foundation and the Chinese National Health Association. Attendees included Sang Guowei, Abulahat Abdurixit, and Gu Xiulian, among other notable figures in the field.
