Cummins light diesel engine is expected to be put into production before 2010

Cummins has cooperated with the U.S. Department of Energy in the development of 4.2-liter V6 and 5.6-liter V8 light-duty diesel engines since 1998. After nearly a decade of research and development, the key performance indicators such as power performance, exhaust emissions, fuel economy, and noise have all achieved the desired goals. It is expected that before 2010, the engine plant in Columbus, Indiana, where the Cummins headquarters is located, will be officially put into production.

With the continuous rise of oil prices in recent years and the ever-increasing competition in the automotive industry, major US car manufacturers that used diesel engines only on heavy-duty pickup trucks have started to research and develop light-duty diesel vehicles to fully exploit the fuel economy advantages of diesel engines.

According to the "Automotive News" magazine, the 2010 Grand Cherokee Jeep will match the Cummins 4.2-liter V6 turbo diesel engine to replace the current 3.0-liter Mercedes-Benz engine.
