Zhejiang Chemical Technology Group Co., Ltd. was founded in September 1999, when the Zhejiang Chemical Research Institute restructured into a technology-driven enterprise. Prior to the reform, it functioned as a closed scientific research institute, focusing mainly on internal R&D. However, after the transformation, the company began to actively explore both domestic and international markets, leveraging global resources to expand its product exports and establish an international presence.
Following the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Ozone-Depleting Substances, the group recognized that alternatives to ODS (Ozone-Depleting Substances) would become a major trend globally. The potential for these substitutes was vast, with strong market demand and promising development opportunities. As a result, Zhejiang Chemical Technology Group quickly established an ODS substitute research and development center, becoming a pioneer in this field. The group has since developed over 10 types of alternative products, ranging from lab-scale testing to large-scale industrial installations of 1,000 tons. It has also created unique production routes and industrial technologies tailored for China, with 12 of them receiving national invention patents. These innovations have enabled the group to cover most of the alternative substances being researched internationally. Some projects are already in full-scale production, such as HCFC-141b and HFC-152a, which have exceeded one-kiloton in output and are now exported globally, showing strong sales performance.
To stay competitive, the group has invested significant effort in understanding the technological advancements, trends, and market conditions in developed countries. Based on this knowledge, they focus on high-tech projects with strong market potential and a solid foundation for development. One such project is the new fire extinguishing agent 1301, which features advanced technology and excellent fire suppression capabilities. After commercialization, the product achieved a 100% market share domestically and became a key revenue driver for the company.
To protect its intellectual property and gain a foothold in the global market, Zhejiang Chemical Technology Group has actively filed for patents. To date, the company has applied for 38 patents, with 16 granted as national invention patents. With the implementation of the Rotterdam Convention in China, the development of a new environmentally friendly, low-toxicity pesticide is imminent. To ensure global market access, the company not only applies for domestic patents but also seeks international protection. For example, two herbicides developed in collaboration with the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry—propyl ester herbicidal ether and isopropyl ester herbicide—have received Chinese invention patents and have also been patented in 17 countries, including the EU, Canada, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, and the U.S.
The group has also seized every opportunity to expand its market reach by participating in major domestic and international exhibitions. This strategy has helped build industry connections and establish cooperative development mechanisms with foreign partners. Collaborations include partnerships with Bayer (Germany), Solvay (Germany), Russia, Finland, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These alliances have enhanced the global recognition of their products. Currently, Zhejiang Chemical Industry Group has established technical cooperation relationships with leading international companies such as DuPont (U.S.), Bayer (Germany), Solvay, BASF, Daikin (Japan), Atochem (France), and others. It has also built stable trading partnerships with over 30 countries and regions, including Western Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. In 2004, the group's main business reached 672 million yuan, generating $37 million in foreign exchange. By 2005, the main business was expected to grow to 800 million yuan, with foreign exchange earnings surpassing $51 million.
