3 injured from Aurora house fire 12-18-13

This morning, Aurora saw a devastating house fire that left three people injured and a home severely damaged. According to The Chicago Tribune, the fire broke out at around 9:55 a.m. on the 900 block of Garfield Street, a far western suburb of Aurora. Emergency services quickly responded, calling in 50 firefighters from multiple departments, including Aurora's rapid intervention team. The fire spread rapidly, engulfing the two-story house and causing significant damage to its walls and attic, making it extremely challenging to extinguish. By the time the firefighters arrived, the home was nearly a total loss. Three individuals—two women and one man—were rushed to local Aurora hospitals due to smoke inhalation and minor injuries like cuts and bruises. Thankfully, officials stated that their conditions are not life-threatening. A heroic effort by an 18-year-old neighbor and three Aurora police officers saved two occupants trapped on a rear upper porch using a ladder before the firefighters fully arrived on the scene. Meanwhile, other agencies such as Sugar Grove and North Aurora provided additional support, while Naperville and Oswego stepped in to assist with emergency calls while Aurora’s resources were occupied. From another angle, The Beacon-News gives a gripping account of the dramatic rescue carried out by Josue Lopez, an 18-year-old local resident. Lopez recounts how he and his family were exiting their home when they heard cries for help coming from a nearby house engulfed in flames. Without a moment’s hesitation, Lopez rushed to the scene where he found Dave and Valerie Dykstra, a couple desperately trying to escape through a broken window. Despite finding the ladder locked up, Lopez coordinated with the arriving Aurora police officers to finally free it and guide the couple to safety. It took over 50 firefighters from three different departments nearly two hours to put out the blaze completely, reducing the once-family home to little more than a charred shell. Dave and Valerie Dykstra suffered cuts and smoke inhalation but were treated and released in stable condition. Their daughter, Victoria, along with their four dogs, managed to flee unscathed. Lopez expressed his relief at being able to assist, emphasizing that he simply did what anyone else would do in the same situation. The fire caused over $300,000 worth of damage, and the cause remains under investigation by the Aurora Fire Department Arson Team. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety and preparedness.
