Firefighters from multiple departments responded to a commercial building fire on Wednesday afternoon at 839 S. Lake Street in Mundelein. Upon arrival, crews observed light smoke emanating from the roof of a strip mall, with haze present inside a restaurant located within the complex. The building was promptly evacuated as the fire quickly intensified. Due to the rapid spread and severity of the flames, the initial dispatch was upgraded to a Box Alarm to request additional resources.
As firefighting efforts continued, the fire managed to burn through the roof structure and the front overhang, causing the signage above the entrance to collapse. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the responding teams, the fire was confined to a single unit, limiting the damage primarily to the affected restaurant and its neighboring establishment. A ladder pipe was employed briefly during the operation once it became unsafe for personnel to remain inside the burning structure.
The firefighting operation involved mutual aid from several surrounding communities, including Mundelein, Countryside, Deerfield-Bannockburn, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Libertyville, Wauconda, Lake Forest, Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, Arlington Heights, and Lake Zurich. Their combined efforts were crucial in containing the blaze and preventing further escalation.
