This just happened earlier tonight: Chicago firefighters were called to a fire at Andy’s Deli located at 5442 North Milwaukee Avenue. When the first units arrived, they found flames engulfing the commercial structure. One of the initial challenges they faced was securing a reliable water source as multiple hydrants in the vicinity were frozen solid due to the bitter cold snap we’ve been experiencing.
Because of this issue and concerns about the stability of the roof, the decision was made to adopt a defensive strategy. A second-alarm status was quickly escalated to a more serious 2-11 alarm situation. Tower ladder trucks and Squad 2’s elevated platform were used to douse the fire from above with their elevated water buckets. Meanwhile, Truck 55 positioned its main hose and set up a powerful master stream to tackle the blaze.
Things got even more interesting when a special request was made for the Mobile Ventilation Unit (MVU), which is typically stationed at Engine 106’s station. It was deployed in Sector 1 to help push the fire toward the rear of the building and through the roof, allowing crews to gain better access. Despite the severe weather conditions, the MVU played a crucial role in helping firefighters contain the damage.
I spoke briefly with Steve Redick, who was on the scene capturing photos, and also connected with Larry Shapiro, another photographer who provided some stunning images. You can check out Larry’s gallery [here]. For those interested in Steve’s perspective, his gallery is available [here].
Here are a few shots I managed to snap myself:

*Sector 1 shows significant smoke but no visible fire yet. Since much of the roof remained intact, space was cleared to make room for the MVU deployment.*

*The fire was centralized within the building, and the MVU 9-2-3 was strategically placed in front of the building to channel the fire outward, making it safer for firefighters to engage directly.*

*Engine 119 managed to locate a hydrant at the end of the alley near Menard Street, but the sewers were obstructed, causing water to accumulate both in the alley and down Menard. Photo credit: Larry Shapiro.*

*Engine 83 brought Light Wagon 9-1-3 to the scene—a standard feature at any 2-11 alarm fire in the city. Toward the end of operations, it was moved to Sector 1 to provide enhanced visibility for directing handlines into the building from the sidewalk. Photo credit: Larry Shapiro.*

*By the time companies started dismantling their hoses, most discovered frozen sections that had to be wrestled onto the engines or even hoisted onto aerial ladder beds for transport back to the station. Repacking with fresh hose became a priority once they returned. Photo credit: Larry Shapiro.*

Overall, it was a challenging night for the department, especially given the freezing temperatures. While the fire caused extensive damage to the deli, the coordinated efforts of all involved helped prevent further spread and potential collapse of the structure. The Chicago Tribune has a brief write-up on the incident [here].
