As we wrap up our four-part series exploring the impressive array of apparatus and equipment housed at the Chicago Fire Department’s Special Operations warehouse, today's post brings you a closer look at some of the specialized vehicles and tools that play a critical role in their operations.
First up is the iconic 2009 Ford Expedition B-545, proudly serving as Battalion Chief 5-1-5. This rugged vehicle is stationed alongside Engine 5 and has been a stalwart presence in the department for years. The accompanying image, captured by photographer Larry Shapiro, highlights its sleek design and purposeful presence.
Next, we have one of the four POD storage units maintained by the Special Operations team. These units serve as mobile storage solutions, providing flexibility and efficiency in managing equipment across various sites. Another key component of their arsenal is the Special Operations Komatsu fork lift, bearing the shop ID #S-053. This essential piece of machinery ensures that heavy lifting tasks are handled with precision and ease. As always, Larry Shapiro’s keen eye captures the intricate details of this indispensable tool.
The department also takes great pride in maintaining their fleet of smaller yet equally vital units. A standout example is the 2008 Bobcat unit with Shop ID# S-119, which remains in top condition thanks to diligent upkeep. Larry Shapiro’s photography beautifully showcases the Bobcat’s functionality and durability.
Complementing these larger pieces of equipment are the two 2004 Cub Cadet mini pumpers and utility units, identified as S-097 and S-087. These compact yet powerful vehicles are invaluable for navigating tight spaces while delivering reliable performance. Larry Shapiro’s images provide a detailed view of their design and capabilities.
Additionally, there are two more 2004 Cub Cadet utility units, labeled S-100 and S-096, further expanding the department’s operational reach. Each of these units plays a crucial role in ensuring that no task goes unaddressed during high-stakes missions.
While some items didn’t make it into the photographs—such as the two wave runner jet skis, a John boat, and a large portable pump unit—they remain integral parts of the Special Operations toolkit. These assets underscore the department’s commitment to having the right resources available whenever they’re needed.
