House fire in Des Plaines, 1-26-18

Firefighters from Des Plaines were dispatched to 539 Westmere Road just after noon on Friday, January 26th, 2018, following reports of a fire in an attached garage. The initial emergency call was quickly followed by several 9-1-1 calls reporting the same incident. Engine 63 was the first unit to arrive on the scene, and upon arrival, they encountered significant flames engulfing the attached garage, which had already spread to the second floor of the split-level home. Strong gusts of wind carried thick plumes of smoke across the street, severely reducing visibility for those on the ground. Due to the intensity of the fire, firefighters couldn't safely enter the building initially. Instead, they deployed an exterior hose line with foam to begin their attack while Tower Ladder 63 was positioned on the roof to facilitate ventilation. Within 20 minutes, four separate water lines were utilized to bring the fire under control. Throughout the operation, all three Des Plaines engines, two ladder trucks, three ambulances, along with the battalion chief and support units like 6100, were present at the scene. Additionally, mutual aid came from neighboring departments including Mount Prospect’s Engine 12, Tower 13, and Battalion 3, as well as Elk Grove Township’s Ambulance 11. Special thanks go out to Nick Marcinkowski for providing these vivid images capturing the dramatic moments of the fire. His photos offer a glimpse into the intense efforts made by local firefighters to protect lives and property amidst challenging conditions. It's always humbling to see how quickly communities rally together when faced with emergencies like this one. [Photos: Nick Marcinkowski]
