From DailyHerald.com:
Residents from the suburbs are stepping up to support those impacted by the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. Seven fire departments have become regional collection hubs for this initiative, which was first inspired by the Buffalo Grove Police Department. These departments—located in Arlington Heights, Grayslake, Round Lake, Schiller Park, Lake Zurich, North Riverside, and Utica—are accepting donations of bottled water to provide clean drinking water to Flint's local police and firefighters.
Firefighter Andrew Larson from the Arlington Heights Fire Department mentioned that they've already gathered 100 cases of water, which they delivered to Buffalo Grove. Deputy Police Chief Roy Bethge anticipates that Buffalo Grove will receive at least 2,000 cases of water, thanks to the overwhelming public response. Originally, off-duty officers planned to transport the water using a truck, but with the flood of donations, they're now hoping someone can lend a semitrailer for the delivery.
Grayslake Fire Chief John Christian noted that their station has seen a steady influx of people dropping off cases of water ever since the campaign started on Monday. The situation in Flint has been dire since high levels of lead were detected in their water supply last year, prompting nationwide support.
In another initiative, the Lake County Housing Authority is gathering bottled water and funds to buy more for Flint Housing Commission residents. They'll take donations of both water and checks at their office, located at 33928 N. Route 45 (just outside Grayslake), until February 4th. Acceptable donation hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. On Wednesday, February 3rd, they’ll accept donations from 8 a.m. to noon, and again from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 4th. Checks should be made payable to the Lake County Housing Authority with "Flint Water" written in the memo line, according to Northern.
This grassroots effort shows the power of communities coming together to address a pressing issue. It’s heartening to see how people are rallying to make a difference.
Thanks, Dan!
