Recently, I was on-site at one of the many hospitals we service in Florida, measuring six chilled water coils for replacement. As I reviewed the units, I was surprised to find that all six had been installed as left-hand coils—despite the fact that three of them should have been right-hand coils. This mistake could have had a significant impact on the building’s HVAC performance.
The importance of proper coil orientation cannot be overstated, especially in critical environments like hospitals where indoor air quality and system efficiency are essential. An incorrect airflow direction can reduce the unit’s capacity and degrade overall indoor conditions. In this case, the error caused a 2-3% efficiency loss per row, which added up to a potential 15% loss for the six-row coil. Over time, this inefficiency leads to higher energy costs and reduced system performance.
Thankfully, I caught the mistake during the measurement process and ensured the correct, right-handed coils were installed. It's a small detail that can make a big difference in the long run.
