Worker dies in chemical tank in Wheeling – update 1

This is the first in a series of updates covering the confined space recovery operation that took place on Thursday at the Sunnyside Corporation industrial site, where a worker was overcome by fumes from methylene chloride inside an outdoor storage tank. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were present for much of the operation, documenting the scene as it unfolded. Larry Shapiro arrived shortly after the initial arrival of Wheeling fire units, and it was soon determined that the situation would be a recovery rather than a rescue. The focus shifted quickly to safely retrieving the victim from the hazardous environment. A technical rescue box alarm was activated, and on-scene units began preparing for the retrieval before supplemental teams arrived with specialized equipment and supplies. The operation was complex and dangerous, requiring careful coordination between emergency responders and safety personnel. As the day progressed, the focus remained on ensuring the safe removal of the victim and supporting the affected workers.
