Worker dies in chemical tank in Wheeling – update 1

This is the first in a series of updates covering the confined space recovery operation that took place on Thursday at the Sunnyside Corporation industrial site, where a worker was overcome by fumes from methylene chloride inside an outdoor storage tank. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were on the scene for much of the operation, capturing key moments as emergency crews worked to recover the victim. Larry Shapiro arrived shortly after the initial Wheeling fire companies and documented the decision to shift the operation from a rescue to a recovery effort. The images below provide a visual account of the challenging conditions and the careful procedures followed during the process. A technical rescue box alarm was activated, and on-scene units began preparing for the removal before supplemental teams arrived with additional equipment and personnel. The operation highlighted the complexity of confined space rescues and the importance of coordinated efforts in such high-risk environments.
