3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows, 3-4-15 (part 1)

Late Wednesday evening (March 4, 2015), emergency services in Rolling Meadows were dispatched to 5201 Carriageway Drive following reports of a fire on the third floor of an apartment building around 8 PM. En route, responders were informed that a couch had caught fire, with flames rapidly spreading up the wall. Battalion 15 quickly escalated the response to a Code 4 for an active fire. Upon arrival, police officers reported seeing flames bursting out of a third-floor window and later confirmed that someone had jumped from a third-floor balcony. It was then that the alarm was elevated further to a MABAS Box Alarm. Witnesses say that by the time firefighters arrived, police officers were already performing CPR on the individual who had fallen from the balcony. Tragically, the Chicago Tribune later reported that the victim did not survive and was pronounced dead at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. The identity and details about the individual remain undisclosed at this time. The fire department’s chief, Scott Franzgrote, stated that while the apartment had been evacuated, one fatality occurred due to the fire. The victim reportedly leaped from the balcony of a third-floor unit. As of approximately 10 PM, the fire had been "brought under control," but firefighters continued their efforts to fully extinguish the blaze. Both the first and second floors of the building were evacuated, and crews were methodically checking the third floor for any remaining threats. In the hours that followed, the incident escalated further, with the alarm being raised to a second-alarm status and eventually to a third alarm before it was finally cleared just before midnight. Multiple witnesses were present at the scene, capturing photos and videos, which will be shared in subsequent posts. Interestingly, this particular building is located directly across the street from another structure within the same complex that experienced a three-alarm fire several years prior. For now, the community remains hopeful that no additional injuries occurred. Emergency personnel worked tirelessly throughout the night to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Updates will continue to be provided as more information becomes available. [Image Caption: A firefighter battles a raging fire at the apartment complex late Wednesday evening.
