This just happened a couple of hours ago in Chicago. Firefighters from the Chicago Fire Department were called to Andy’s Deli, located at 5442 North Milwaukee Avenue, late Wednesday evening. When the first units arrived on the scene, they discovered flames engulfing the commercial structure. Unfortunately, securing a water supply proved challenging due to multiple frozen hydrants in the vicinity. This situation forced the firefighters to adopt a defensive strategy partly because there were concerns regarding the structural integrity of the roof. Consequently, a 2-11 Alarm was requested.
The initial firefighting efforts involved two tower ladders and Squad 2’s Snorkel, which utilized their buckets to apply water. Meanwhile, Truck 55 positioned its main line in the air, equipped with a master stream. Additionally, a special call was issued for the Mobile Ventilation Unit (9-2-3) stationed at Engine 106’s quarters. The MVU was deployed in Sector 1 to help push the fire towards the rear and through the roof, creating an opportunity for firefighters to target the flames directly, given that a significant portion of the roof remained intact.
I’ve been following this incident closely. Steve Redick captured some incredible footage, and Larry Shapiro has shared a fantastic gallery of images from the scene. You can check out Larry’s gallery [here](#). Steve’s gallery is available [here](#).
Below are some images taken from different angles around the deli. The first image gives us a glimpse of Sector 1, showing thick smoke but no visible fire yet. Since much of the roof was still standing, crews worked diligently to clear the area in front of the building to make room for the Mobile Ventilation Unit. As you can see in the second image, the fire was primarily in the center of the building, and because the roof was mostly intact, the MVU 9-2-3 was set up in front of the building to help disperse the smoke and flames, allowing firefighters to tackle the blaze more effectively without needing to enter the premises.
Another striking image from the alley reveals heavy smoke billowing out from the rear of the building, thanks to the MVU’s operation in front. In another shot, Engine 119 managed to find a hydrant at the end of the alley near Menard. However, the sewers were obstructed, leading to a significant accumulation of water both in the alley itself and down Menard Street. Engine 83 also brought Light Wagon 9-1-3 to the scene, which is standard practice for 2-11 alarm fires in the city. By the end of the event, it was moved to Sector 1 to provide better visibility for directing handlines deep into the building from the sidewalk.
Towards the conclusion of the firefighting operations, many units encountered frozen hoses while breaking down their lines. This necessitated extra effort to wrestle with the stiff hoses and load them back onto the engines. Some even had to place the frozen sections over the aerial beds of ladders for safe transport back to the firehouse. Once there, crews repacked their equipment and dealt with the frozen hoses as best as they could.
One final image shows Engine 108 with its frozen hose draped over the top of the vehicle, carefully prepared for the journey back to quarters. It’s clear that despite the challenges posed by the freezing conditions, the firefighters demonstrated immense dedication and teamwork throughout this incident.
For those interested in more details, the Chicago Tribune has a brief article covering this fire [here](#). Overall, it’s been quite an intense night for the Chicago Fire Department, and I’ll continue to keep an eye on any updates or further developments.
Veneer And Peeling Knives
Veneer And Peeling Knives
Veneer knives are crafted using high-quality materials such as high-speed steel (HSS) or carbide, ensuring durability and longevity. Wood veneer blade feature sharp cutting edges that deliver clean and precise slices, resulting in smooth and uniform veneer surfaces.
These knives come in various blade profiles to accommodate different slicing methods and desired veneer thicknesses. They are engineered to withstand the heat generated during the slicing process, maintaining consistent cutting performance over prolonged use.
Regular maintenance is essential for veneer slicing knives to retain their cutting efficiency. This includes sharpening and honing the blades to ensure optimal performance and extend their lifespan.
Veneer slicing knives are indispensable tools in the veneer production industry, enabling the efficient transformation of raw wood into thin, high-quality veneer sheets. Through careful handling, proper maintenance, and adherence to cutting parameters, these knives contribute to the production of exquisite wood products.
