The Newport Township Fire Department was called to a house fire at 3:30 PM on Thursday, April 4th, at 38591 Arbor Court in Wadsworth. Upon arrival, the first responding units found flames engulfing a large two- and three-story home located at the end of a dead-end street in a subdivision without access to fire hydrants. The incident was quickly escalated to a Box Alarm as firefighters initiated an interior attack, supported by one of Newport’s pumper/tankers.
As the fire spread rapidly through the structure, crews were forced to abandon the interior operation. Within minutes, the alarm was upgraded to a second, then third, and finally a fourth alarm, bringing additional resources from across Lake County and neighboring Kenosha County, Wisconsin.
To support the ongoing firefighting efforts, an extensive tanker shuttle system was established. Three portable water tanks were positioned approximately 2,000 feet away from the fire scene at the intersection of Cashmere Road and Crabapple Drive. At least 10 tankers were deployed, with each unit traveling over three miles to refill and return to the site.
The fourth alarm was officially lifted just after 7:00 PM, marking the end of the major response. Jeff Rudolph arrived with the initial box alarm units and captured several images of the house fully involved in flames. Later, Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro also reached the scene and plan to share additional photos and a video of the incident.
Multiple photographs have been uploaded, showcasing the extent of the damage. These include dramatic shots of the burned-out structure, as well as images of firefighters working on the scene. One particularly notable photo shows a firefighter rescuing chickens during the blaze. Another image highlights a firefighter with an ice-covered helmet, capturing the intense conditions faced by emergency responders.
These visuals provide a powerful glimpse into the scale and severity of the fire, as well as the dedication of the crews who worked tirelessly to contain it. The community is now left to deal with the aftermath of what was a devastating event.
