4-Alarm house fire in Wadsworth, 1-23-14 (pt 1)

The Newport Township Fire Department was dispatched at 3:30 PM on Thursday for a house fire at 38591 Arbor Court in Wadsworth. Upon arrival, the first responding units found flames engulfing a large two- and three-story home located at the end of a dead-end street in a subdivision that lacked fire hydrants. The initial response quickly escalated to a Box Alarm as crews launched an interior attack, supported by one of Newport’s pumper/tankers. However, due to the rapid spread of the fire, crews were forced to abandon the interior operation. Within minutes, the alarm was upgraded to a second, then third, and finally a fourth alarm, calling in additional resources from across Lake County and even neighboring Kenosha County, Wisconsin. A significant tanker shuttle was established, with three portable water tanks positioned approximately 2,000 feet away from the structure at the intersection of Cashmere Road and Crabapple Drive. At least 10 tankers were deployed, each traveling over three miles to fill up and return, creating a continuous water supply for the firefighters battling the blaze. The fourth alarm was called off just after 7:00 PM, marking the end of a long and intense firefighting effort. Jeff Rudolph arrived with the box alarm companies and captured images of the house fully involved in flames.
