As the Media and Entertainment industry continues to evolve, it has demonstrated remarkable resilience over the years, reinventing itself to adapt to new challenges and opportunities. Talented creators are still producing incredible content, such as "Inside Out 2," which became the highest-grossing animated film ever, and cross-over projects like "The Last of Us" and "Fallout," while simultaneously seeking ways to improve their production pipelines for greater efficiency.
At Autodesk, we recognize that content must not only captivate audiences but also be financially viable. This is why we are dedicated to improving the performance and functionality of our tools, incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) workflows to streamline repetitive tasks, allowing artists more room for creative exploration and storytelling.
AI has become a focal point within the entertainment sector, arguably more so than in any other field. Despite the excitement surrounding it, we need solutions that can enhance existing workflows without causing disruptions, while always keeping an eye on future innovations.
One of our focuses at Autodesk is enhancing our core tools with AI capabilities to boost artist productivity:
- Rendering high-quality images often requires extensive computational resources. By applying AI in Arnold, we've managed to reduce noise in images significantly. Now, artists can quickly remove noise from rendered scenes every time they create a new image.
- Suppose an artist is editing footage in Flame and wishes to slow down a clip. With AI assistance, we can generate additional frames to fill gaps, resulting in smoother transitions and a more polished outcome.
- In Maya, users now have access to the **ML Deformer**. This tool uses machine learning algorithms to analyze complex character movements based solely on scene data. Animators can then manipulate characters in real-time, with the software predicting intricate deformations automatically.
Looking ahead, we're excited to introduce groundbreaking AI features like Motion Prediction in Wonder Studio, our platform designed to integrate virtual characters seamlessly into live-action films. This feature predicts character movements even when obstructed from view, ensuring smoother, more lifelike animations.
Peter France, a VFX artist at Corridor Digital, noted, "For independent artists, having tools like Wonder Studio means being able to pursue ambitious projects that might otherwise seem out of reach."
Autodesk Research is also exploring innovative applications of AI for artists. For instance, Neural Motion Control, a prototype, allows animators to guide a character's actions using minimal input combined with a neural network. This approach saves significant time while preserving fine-grained control, enabling animators to concentrate on delivering nuanced performances.
In addition to these advancements, Autodesk Flow, our industry cloud for Media and Entertainment, streamlines processes across the entire production cycle, from initial concepts through final deliveries. At its core lies a unified data framework supporting our latest offerings showcased at Autodesk University (AU).
Features include:
- An improved user interface in **Flow Capture**, our camera-to-cloud solution, prioritizing asset management by placing assets front and center where they belong. Studios benefit from centralized storage, enhanced organization via drag-and-drop functionalities, among other enhancements.
- Our newly launched **Flow Graph Engine API** empowers developers to execute Bifrost graphs in the cloud and design tailored computing solutions for studios. DigitalFish, a firm specializing in developing cutting-edge tools for media and entertainment, has already utilized this API to build an XR workflow leveraging Apple’s iOS and visionOS technologies. This setup facilitates effect computation and pre-visualization directly on set. Starting with set scanning to generate digital twins, followed by mesh completion using the Flow Graph Engine, VFX artists can incorporate 3D assets and simulations reacting dynamically to the digital twin. Effects are computed in the cloud, providing directors with precise previews to ensure accurate visual effects integration. Actors refine their performances, cinematographers select optimal camera angles, and the whole team interacts with 3D elements effectively.
- New Flow capabilities are being integrated into our desktop applications to enhance artist workflows. One such feature is **Flow Animating in Context for Maya**, bridging the gap between editorial intentions and Maya artists. By linking Flow Production Tracking data to Maya and vice versa, animators gain visibility into the editorial timeline while working, leading to faster, higher-quality animations.
Our goal is to empower creativity and optimize workflows. We remain committed to adding value to your current tools while introducing advanced solutions like Autodesk Flow and meaningful AI implementations.
The industry will keep evolving, and we'll stay at the forefront of these changes alongside you.
