Firefighters from Des Plaines were dispatched to 539 Westmere Road just after noon on Friday, January 26th, 2018, following reports of a fire in an attached garage. The initial call quickly escalated as multiple 9-1-1 calls came flooding in. Engine 63 was the first to arrive, reporting intense flames engulfing the attached garage and spreading to the second floor of the split-level home. Strong winds carried thick plumes of smoke across the street, significantly reducing visibility for those on the ground.
Due to the intensity of the fire, firefighters couldn’t safely enter the building. Instead, they initiated an exterior attack using foam and set up Tower Ladder 63 on the roof for ventilation. Within 20 minutes, four water lines were employed, successfully knocking down the blaze. All three Des Plaines engines, both tower trucks, three ambulances, along with the battalion chief and additional support vehicles, were present at the scene. Mutual aid was provided by Mount Prospect Engine 12, Tower 13, Battalion 3, and Elk Grove Township Ambulance 11.
I want to express my gratitude to Nick Marcinkowski for sharing these powerful images. His photos truly capture the scale and intensity of the incident. It’s incredible to see how quickly the community responded and worked together to contain the situation. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the damage to the property is evident from the photographs. It's a reminder of the importance of fire safety and preparedness.
