Swiss energy company keeps employees safe using Elios 2 in treacherous mountain pass

October 14, 2020—A brand-new video has surfaced showing how the team at Kraftwerke Oberhasli AG utilized the Elios 2 to enhance safety measures during the construction of a dam in Grimsel Pass, Switzerland. It's fascinating to see how modern technology is making such a significant impact. In this latest video, personnel from KWO, a prominent Swiss energy provider, explain their strategy of keeping workers out of danger zones by employing Flyability’s Elios 2 to gather essential visual data while constructing the dam. The dam itself is under construction in Grimsel Pass, Switzerland, a location nestled within the Bernese Alps at an altitude of 1.9 kilometers (approximately 1.2 miles). These rugged conditions present quite the challenge for workers. The road along the pass remains shut from October through May due to heavy snowfall and severe weather, meaning the dam construction is only feasible during the warmer months. During the dam-building process, KWO had to carry out a comprehensive visual inspection of a deep pit prior to installing an elevator. They used the Elios 2 to capture all necessary visual data to ensure it was safe to proceed with the elevator installation. Without the Elios 2, the inspection would have required inspectors to be lowered into the pit either through rope access or from a crane. Thanks to the drone, however, all visual data was collected without any personnel needing to enter the hazardous pit. Pascal Reber, the Civil Engineering Site Manager at KWO, noted, "We're always on the lookout for new technologies that enable machines and robots to handle risky tasks, thereby safeguarding human lives." He added, "The impressive outcomes from using Elios 2 give us confidence as we move forward with future projects, knowing our team will remain safe." The Elios 2 proved particularly effective for this pit inspection because of its unique drone cage design, which allows it to bump into obstacles and still continue flying. This feature makes it perfect for confined or challenging environments, such as inside boilers or pressure vessels, or, in this instance, a pit carved into the side of a mountain. Beyond enhancing safety, the Elios 2 also dramatically accelerated the inspection process and provided the KWO team with more flexibility in conducting the inspection and sharing the data afterward. Reber further explained, "A manual inspection of the pit usually takes three to four people an entire week, but with the Elios 2, we achieved the same results in just two hours. Manual inspections require starting from the top and working your way down step-by-step, whereas with the drone, we can begin at the bottom and directly fly to the area we need to inspect, capturing high-quality visuals we can share with others."
