China's mechanical base industry has long faced challenges due to insufficient investment and a weak foundation, despite its critical role in the broader machinery sector. Over time, this lack of focus has led to an industry that is underdeveloped, with limited capabilities and low technological standards. As China’s host equipment (such as industrial machines and vehicles) continues to evolve, the lagging performance of mechanical components has become increasingly evident. Although the government has introduced some support in areas like technology transfer, R&D, and modernization in recent years, these efforts still fall short compared to domestic demand and international benchmarks. The variety and quality of China's mechanical base products remain limited, with many high-end components still relying on imports. This has forced many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to opt for imported components, further reducing the market share of domestically produced basic parts—especially those with low technological content. While China does have advantages in exporting labor-intensive mechanical components, these are typically low-value, high-volume items with little added value. The industry as a whole lacks advanced technologies and competitive edge in higher-end markets. Currently, the Chinese mechanical base industry faces several major challenges: First, there is serious overbuilding and a lack of specialization. Many enterprises operate at small scales, leading to inefficiencies and low economic returns. For example, the total bearing capacity of China's three major bearing companies is less than that of one single foreign firm. Similarly, numerous hydraulic parts factories have been established, but most produce only small quantities, failing to achieve economies of scale. In contrast, companies like Germany’s Rexroth and Japan’s Yau Institute produce millions of units annually. Second, research and development (R&D) is weak, and capital investment in innovation is inadequate. Although China has imported foreign technologies in the past, it has struggled to fully absorb and improve upon them. The ratio of R&D investment to technology absorption is far below what is needed, and while many Chinese universities produce high-level research, the gap between theory and practical application remains wide. Third, the quality of raw materials and related technologies lags behind global standards. Poor-quality steel used in fasteners, bearings, and molds affects product performance, and outdated processing equipment limits precision and efficiency. Many Chinese enterprises lack the financial resources to upgrade their facilities, which hinders overall product quality and competitiveness. In summary, the root causes of these problems include weak corporate foundations, insufficient national policy support, and limited investment in science and technology. To address these issues, the industry must undergo restructuring, consolidate resources, and eliminate outdated enterprises. Over the next five to ten years, the goal should be to develop strong brands, enhance technological innovation, improve market competitiveness, and implement more efficient management practices. Only through these efforts can China's mechanical base industry truly meet the growing needs of its domestic machinery sector and gain a stronger foothold in the global market.
