Seiko has introduced a groundbreaking "Double Link Arm Steering System (DPASS)" that operates by directly rotating the front wheel steering rods using the rotational force from two motors. This innovative system was showcased at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show, which took place from October 27 to November 11, 2007. The DPASS integrates Seiko's Multi-sensing Hub Unit with two motors, enhancing active safety and improving vehicle control.
The company’s multi-sensor hub is capable of detecting three types of forces from the road surface: lateral force (the force acting on the tire during cornering), longitudinal force (the force experienced during acceleration and braking), and vertical force (the contact force between the tire and the road). By continuously monitoring these forces, the system adjusts the vehicle's response in real time, ensuring optimal handling even when road conditions change. This allows the driver to maintain precise control over the vehicle's direction.
Unlike traditional steer-by-wire systems that typically use a rack-driven electric power steering (EPS) mechanism, the DPASS uses a unique design where the left and right wheels are controlled by arms extending perpendicularly from the motor shafts. This eliminates the need for a conventional steering shaft and rack-and-pinion system, significantly simplifying the mechanical structure and improving space efficiency. Additionally, the dual-motor setup provides a built-in fault protection feature—should one motor fail, the other can take over, ensuring continued safe operation.
JTEKT, a leading manufacturer in bearing technology, also presented its own steer-by-wire system at the same event, utilizing a rack-driven EPS approach. As more automotive companies invest in this emerging technology, the competition in developing advanced wire-controlled steering systems is expected to intensify in the coming years.
