In a recent report by The Morning News, it was revealed that over 100 specially modified taxi vehicles will hit the streets of Shanghai this month. These quasi-special taxis are based on the popular Santana 3000 model and are part of a broader plan to introduce 2,000 such vehicles throughout the year. However, they are considered a transitional model, with the official taxi-specific vehicle expected to be launched in 2006.
This model has now been officially added to the national production list, allowing for mass production and licensing. One of its key features is the dual-fuel system, which allows for automatic switching between gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), making it more environmentally friendly and cost-effective. The rear trunk has also been redesigned to accommodate larger suitcases and carts, which were previously difficult to secure.
Inside the vehicle, the equipment has been customized to meet taxi-specific needs. For example, there are dedicated interfaces for the meter and dome lights, ensuring seamless operation. To enhance passenger comfort, the rear seats have been redesigned to eliminate the uncomfortable hump in the middle. The front anti-jacket has been improved, and when tilted outward, the dashboard appears more streamlined, reducing the feeling of being cramped.
The chassis and braking systems have also been upgraded for better performance and stability. Looking ahead, the city plans to produce taxis strictly according to the upcoming "Standard for Taxi-Specific Vehicle Models," which will be formalized as regulations. Starting in 2006, fully certified taxi special vehicles will begin operating, and by 2010, these models are expected to dominate the entire industry.
The general design concept for Shanghai’s taxis includes an attractive exterior, a spacious cabin, a simple interior, and durable construction. While luxury features are not emphasized, the focus is on practicality and long-term usability. The wide passenger seats ensure comfort, and the meter is positioned for easy visibility by passengers. The driver sits at the designated seat, while passengers can easily open the doors and trunk lids.
