Shanghai 100-odd Taxi Special Vehicles Goes to the Street this Month

Shanghai is set to introduce a new fleet of taxi special vehicles this month, with over 100 units expected to hit the streets. According to the City Taxi Management Office, these quasi-special vehicles are based on the Santana 3000 model and are part of a larger plan to launch 2,000 such cars throughout the year. However, this model is considered a transitional version, with the official taxi special vehicle expected to be launched in 2006. The vehicle has recently been added to the national production list, which allows it to be manufactured and licensed for use. One of its key features is the dual-fuel system that automatically switches between gasoline and liquefied gas, making it more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly. The rear trunk has also been expanded to accommodate larger suitcases and trolleys that were previously difficult to fit. Inside, the car is equipped with customized features, including reserved interfaces for meters and dome lights. To enhance passenger comfort, the rear seats have been redesigned to eliminate the uncomfortable hump in the middle, while the front seat covers have been improved for better support. The dashboard has also been adjusted so that when tilted outward, it appears more streamlined and less oppressive for passengers. In terms of performance, the vehicle’s chassis and braking system have been upgraded for greater stability and safety. Looking ahead, Shanghai plans to implement strict standards for taxi-specific vehicles, with a formal "Taxi-Specific Vehicle Model Standard" expected to be introduced as a regulation. Starting in 2006, the city will begin operating fully certified taxi special vehicles, and by 2010, these models are expected to dominate the industry. The overall design of the Shanghai taxi aims to be both functional and appealing—featuring a sleek exterior, a spacious cabin, a simple interior, and durable construction. While luxury amenities are not emphasized, the focus is on practicality, comfort, and ease of use. Passengers can easily access the meter, and the driver’s seat is positioned for optimal visibility and control. Additionally, passengers are able to open the doors and trunk lids themselves, enhancing convenience and user experience. (Reporter: Zhong Hui)
