Excerpts from woodtv.com:
Hundreds of police officers and firefighters from across the Midwest joined community members in Kalamazoo on Wednesday to honor Comstock Township Fire Chief Ed Switalski, who was tragically killed last week when he was struck by a vehicle during an emergency call.
The chief was laid to rest with full honors, including the presentation of a duty medal, a bell ceremony, taps, a flag folding, a 21-gun salute, and his final call. The event reflected the deep respect and admiration that the community and fellow first responders had for him.
Everyone who spoke about Switalski, whether it was family or friends, shared a common theme: a selfless and generous heart. His compassion touched many lives over the years.
"He always cared about others. He was there when my Auntie Holly went through breast cancer treatment. He even donated his kidney to his nephew Christopher when he needed one," said his niece.
Switalski leaves behind a wife and two daughters, one of whom delivered a heartfelt message at the funeral.
"I am also honored to be the last family member to have seen and spoken to him," said Emily Switalski. "Before every call, my mom, my sister, and I would say, 'I love you. Be safe.' Those were the last words I ever said to him."
Before the final call for Switalski sounded, hundreds of firefighters from Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois — where he worked for nearly 30 years before becoming fire chief in Comstock Township in 2013 — took part in the funeral procession.
A restored 1937 fire truck carried his body 24 miles from the funeral home through downtown Kalamazoo and into Comstock Township, arriving at the Wings Event Center. Over 200 fire engines followed, and members of the public lined the streets to show their gratitude.
The procession continued out of Kalamazoo and past Comstock’s three fire stations. At the River Street station, Switalski's bunker gear and helmet were laid out on the apron as Battle Creek firefighters stood by. These firefighters had never met Switalski but came on their day off to honor him.
"It’s a great honor for us to cover this station for these firefighters and their chief," said BCFD Lt. Lamar Mingle.
Gov. Rick Snyder ordered U.S. and Michigan flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Switalski.
Thanks Dan
