A Buffalo Grove firefighter and police team was dispatched to 1011 Aspen Drive late Monday afternoon after a worker became trapped in a hole in the front yard. The incident occurred during a sewer repair at the residence, where one worker was inside the trench when a sudden ground collapse occurred.
Upon arrival, firefighters found workers desperately trying to dig out their coworker. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the entire MABAS Division 1 Technical Rescue Team was called in. Firefighters from Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods immediately began the rescue operation. Initial reports indicated that the victim was unconscious and not breathing.
Technical rescue specialists arrived from several nearby areas, including Palatine, Mount Prospect, Des Plaines, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling, Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Inverness, and Bartlett. Additionally, Buffalo Grove’s Mobile Communications unit was on scene. A special request was made for an Arlington Heights Public Works sewer vacuum, but the rescue was completed before the unit could arrive.
The victim, who did not survive, was transported from the scene by a Mundelein ambulance. The rescue involved multiple agencies working together under high-pressure conditions, highlighting the importance of coordinated emergency response. Local media and photographers, including Larry Shapiro, captured the scene, providing visual documentation of the tragic event.
This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by workers in excavation and trench environments, and the critical role of trained emergency responders in such situations. Investigations into the cause of the ground collapse are ongoing.
