Trench rescue in Buffalo Grove, 12-12-22

A worker was trapped in a hole in the front yard of a home on Aspen Drive in Buffalo Grove late Monday afternoon, prompting an emergency response from local firefighters and police. The incident occurred during a sewer repair project, where one worker became stuck after a section of ground collapsed around him. Upon arrival, firefighters found workers frantically digging to free their colleague. The situation quickly escalated, and the MABAS Division 1 Technical Rescue Team was mobilized. Firefighters from Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods joined forces with technical rescue specialists from Palatine, Mount Prospect, Des Plaines, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling, Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Inverness, and Bartlett. A special request was also made for an Arlington Heights Public Works sewer vacuum, though it arrived too late to assist in the rescue. Initial reports indicated that the victim was unconscious and not breathing. Despite the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies, the worker did not survive. He was later transported from the scene by a Mundelein ambulance. The incident highlights the dangers faced by workers in trench and excavation sites, underscoring the importance of proper safety protocols and rapid emergency response. Local authorities are now investigating the cause of the ground collapse and will be reviewing procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Photos from the scene, captured by Larry Shapiro, show the intense effort of first responders and the seriousness of the situation. Multiple images, including some from a larger gallery, were shared as part of the ongoing coverage of this tragic event.

Piston

The engine piston is an integral component of an internal combustion engine. Crafted from durable materials like aluminum alloy, it is designed to withstand high pressure and heat. This cylindrical piece of metal moves up and down in the engine's cylinder, converting the force from the expanding gas in the cylinder into mechanical energy. The top part, known as the piston crown, is exposed to extreme temperatures and combustion pressures, while the lower part, the skirt, helps guide the piston and reduce vibration. The piston rings, situated around the piston, prevent gas leakage and regulate oil distribution.
