3-Alarm fire in West Chicago, 11-10-14

On November 10, 2014, around 11:05 a.m., the West Chicago Fire Protection District (FPD) responded to a reported house fire at 28W649 Hickory Lane. The first arriving unit, Batt 6, observed smoke coming from the structure.

When I arrived, the fire was already venting from the second floor along the mansard roofline. The home was a two-story frame building, approximately 50 by 50 feet, with a full mansard roof that extended from the second floor down to about three feet above the ground.

The responding companies entered through the front door, and within minutes, the fire had dropped into the interior of the mansard. There was visible fire near the entry point, so command ordered all units to evacuate and an exterior attack was initiated. The fire spread to the east and south sides of the house, and crews worked hard to stay ahead of it as they pulled and opened up the mansard, encountering fire in front of them.

It took roughly 45 minutes to bring the fire under control.

According to reports, the fire was caused by someone working on the pipes inside the first floor of the home.
