The Wauconda Fire Department, part of MABAS Division 4, responded to a single-family house fire on Madison Avenue at approximately 1:00 PM today. The incident occurred at 1116 Madison Avenue, where firefighters discovered heavy fire in the garage that had spread into the main house and attic. Due to the severity of the fire, the department escalated the response to a MABAS Box Alarm, calling for mutual aid from several surrounding departments.
At the time of the fire, no one was home. The garage suffered significant damage, including destruction of a vehicle inside and roof damage. However, the main house was only affected in the area directly behind the two-story garage, limiting overall structural damage.
Firefighters from Lake Zurich, Lake Villa, Nunda, Barrington, Round Lake, Mundelein, Countryside, and Long Grove assisted with the response. Larry Shapiro arrived after the fire was under control and captured several images from the scene.
One of the first engines on the scene was Wauconda Engine 341, a 2009 HME/Ferrara Intruder, which had three lines deployed. The image shows the engine still active during the initial attack.
From the street, it might appear that the window above the garage was a bedroom, but in reality, there was no floor or finished space in that area. Additionally, there was no second floor above the garage, despite the presence of a large window visible in Google Maps images.
Several gusset plates, which are critical components in lightweight roof trusses, failed in the garage area, contributing to the rapid spread of the fire. A close-up view of the damaged trusses highlights this structural weakness.
Mutual aid units were staged on Bonner Road, where apparatus from Round Lake, Mundelein, Countryside, and Long Grove were seen waiting for further instructions. An Nunda Fire Department ambulance was also on standby.
During the overhaul phase, Wauconda firefighters worked to extinguish hot spots in the garage. Larry Shapiro’s gallery includes more photos from the scene, offering a detailed look at the fire and its aftermath.
