3-Alarm fire in West Chicago, 11-10-14

This is from John Tulipano:

On November 10, 2014, around 11:05 a.m., West Chicago Fire Protection District (FPD) was called to a house fire at 28W649 Hickory Lane. The first arriving unit, Batt 6, reported smoke coming from the structure.

When I arrived, flames were visible coming out of the second floor along the mansard roofline. The home was a two-story frame house, approximately 50 by 50 feet, with a full mansard roof that extended from the second floor down to about three feet above the ground.

The responding units entered through the front door, and within minutes, the fire had dropped down inside the mansard area. There was fire near the entryway, so command ordered all crews to evacuate the building and switch to an exterior attack. As they pulled back, the fire moved to the east and south sides of the house. Crews worked hard to stay ahead of the flames as they opened up the mansard, only to find more fire in front of them.

The fire took about 45 minutes to bring under control. It appears the fire originated from someone working on pipes inside the first floor of the house.

More photos will be posted soon.
