General Mechanical Equipment Pump Selection Summary

Pumps are versatile and widely used mechanical equipment across various industries such as petroleum, chemical, power, metallurgy, mining, shipbuilding, light industry, agriculture, civil engineering, and defense. They play a vital role in the national economy. According to statistics, China produced 1.256 million pumps in a single year, and pump energy consumption accounts for over 21% of the country's total electricity usage. Therefore, reducing pump energy consumption is of great importance for energy conservation. In recent years, many energy-efficient pump models have been developed and manufactured in the industry, such as IHF, CQB, FSB, and UHB. These products have contributed significantly to lowering energy use. However, despite these efforts, many pumps are still operating inefficiently due to improper selection, leading to high energy waste and increased maintenance costs. Some pumps are even rendered unusable or result in poor economic returns due to incorrect sizing or application. Rational pump selection is therefore essential for achieving energy efficiency. It involves considering multiple technical and economic factors, including initial investment, operating costs, performance, reliability, and applicability. A well-selected pump should meet the following criteria: 1. It must satisfy the required flow and head, ensuring that the operating point lies within the high-efficiency range of the pump curve to avoid damage and unnecessary wear. 2. The pump should be compact, lightweight, cost-effective, and efficient. 3. It should have good anti-cavitation performance, which reduces the need for deep pump rooms and enhances smooth operation and longevity. 4. The selected pump should minimize construction and operational costs for the pumping station. When selecting a pump, it is crucial to gather and analyze the following basic data: - Properties of the medium (name, specific gravity, viscosity, corrosiveness, toxicity, etc.) - Particle size and content in the medium - Medium temperature - Required flow rate (considering normal, minimum, and maximum values) - Pressure conditions (suction and discharge pressure, friction loss in the piping system) - Piping system details (diameter, length, fittings, elevation differences, etc.) In pipeline design, attention should be given to: - Choosing an optimal pipe diameter to balance flow velocity, resistance, and cost. - Ensuring that the discharge piping can withstand maximum pressure. - Minimizing bends and using large-radius elbows when necessary. - Installing valves and check valves on the discharge side to control flow and prevent backflow damage. When determining the flow and head requirements, it’s important to account for process variations and include appropriate safety margins based on the pump type and operating conditions. If only weight flow is provided, it should be converted to volume flow for accurate pump selection. Proper pump selection not only improves energy efficiency but also ensures long-term reliability and cost-effectiveness in various applications.
