Guangdong Wanhe Group, a leading company in China's gas appliance industry, recently held a press conference to announce the successful development of the world's first gas water heater with a thermal efficiency exceeding 100%. According to an official test report from the National Gas Appliance Inspection and Testing Center, the thermal efficiency of this new model has surpassed 100%, reaching as high as 103.4%. Professor Xia Zhaozhi, a renowned expert in gas heating technology from Chongqing University, stated that this achievement represents the highest level of thermal efficiency currently achieved in household heating equipment.
In the field of traditional heating systems, thermal efficiency typically refers to the ratio of usable heat energy to the total energy input. However, with condensing technology, the latent heat from combustion gases can now be recovered, significantly improving efficiency. According to the senior engineer at the National Gas Appliance Inspection and Testing Center, the thermal efficiency calculation traditionally only considers sensible heat. But with the integration of condensing technology, the denominator remains "sensible heat," while the numerator includes both "sensible heat" and "latent heat." This shift allows for thermal efficiency to exceed 100% under current technological conditions.
Professor Xia explained that condensing water heaters rely on capturing latent heat through condensation. The more efficiently this heat is utilized, the greater the energy-saving effect. "The higher the thermal efficiency, the better the energy performance," he added.
Wanhe Group has been at the forefront of condensing water heater technology for over two decades. Under Professor Xia’s guidance, the company has developed three generations of products. The first generation, launched in 2001, had a thermal efficiency of 92%. The second generation, the V99 series introduced in September 2005, reached 99.6%. The third generation, the V100 series, now achieves a thermal efficiency of over 102%, making it the most efficient gas water heater in the world. This marks the first time that Chinese gas water heaters have taken the lead in global technology.
Lu Chulong, President of Wanhe Group, emphasized the company’s strong commitment to independent innovation. Every year, Wanhe invests heavily in research and development, filling nine domestic technology gaps in the gas appliance sector, particularly in energy-efficient appliances. In addition to condensing technology, the second and third generations of condensing water heaters incorporate six other energy-saving innovations, resulting in thermal efficiencies far beyond those of conventional models.
