Guangdong Wanhe Group, a top player in China's gas appliance industry, recently held a press conference to announce the successful development of the world’s first gas water heater with a thermal efficiency exceeding 100%. According to a test report from the National Gas Appliance Inspection and Testing Center, the device achieved a thermal efficiency as high as 103.4%, marking a groundbreaking achievement in heating technology. Professor Xia Zhaozhi, a leading expert in gas heat energy from Chongqing University, emphasized that this is currently the highest thermal efficiency level achieved in household heating equipment.
In the field of gas water heaters, thermal efficiency is typically calculated based on the utilization of sensible heat, which is the heat directly transferred to the water. However, latent heat—hidden in the water vapor produced during combustion—is often lost through exhaust gases. European standards only consider sensible heat for efficiency calculations, while condensing water heaters aim to recover some of this latent heat. Under national standards, the formula for thermal efficiency now includes both sensible and latent heat, which allows for the possibility of exceeding 100% efficiency.
"Currently, the main way to utilize latent heat globally is through condensation technology," explained Professor Xia. "The energy-saving performance of condensing water heaters largely depends on their thermal efficiency. The higher the efficiency, the better the energy savings."
Wanhe Group has been at the forefront of condensing water heater technology for over two decades. With Professor Xia’s guidance, the company has developed three generations of products. The first generation, launched in 2001, had a thermal efficiency of 92%. In 2005, they introduced the V99 series, achieving an impressive 99.6% efficiency. Now, their latest model, the V100, exceeds 102% efficiency, making it the most efficient gas water heater in the world. This breakthrough marks the first time Chinese technology leads globally in this sector.
Lu Chulong, president of Wanhe Group, highlighted the company's strong commitment to independent innovation. Every year, Wanhe invests heavily in R&D, filling nine domestic technology gaps in the gas appliance industry. In addition to condensing technology, the second and third generations of their condensing water heaters incorporate six other energy-saving innovations, significantly boosting efficiency beyond that of standard models.
This achievement not only showcases China’s growing technological prowess but also sets a new benchmark for energy-efficient home appliances worldwide.
