In a recent development, Momentive High-Tech Materials Group (formerly known as GE Advanced Materials Group) and the Beijing Ministry of Agriculture have jointly released the latest results from their pesticide spraying technology collaboration project. Over the past two years, the application of Momentive's Silwet product line across key agricultural regions nationwide has delivered impressive outcomes. Data indicates that using Silwet products can cut pesticide usage by 20% to 30%, while also reducing water consumption by up to 50%. Currently, more than 500 counties and cities in 16 provinces have adopted this innovative solution.
Over the past two years, the total reduction in active pesticide ingredients has reached approximately 230 tons, with water savings exceeding 300,000 tons. According to technical experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, China has 1.8 billion mu of arable land, with annual pesticide use reaching 160,000 tons. Excessive pesticide use leads to significant residue on crops and causes severe environmental pollution. The innovative technology provided by Momentive helps conserve water and minimize environmental damage.
Based on the country’s 1.8 billion mu of farmland, the use of Silwet technology could save 75 kg of water per mu annually—representing a 50% reduction and five applications per year. If fully implemented, the country could save at least 135 million tons of spray water, and pesticide use could be reduced by 30%, saving around 48,000 tons nationally.
The collaboration between Momentive High-Tech Materials Group and the Ministry of Agriculture began in November 2005, with the signing of a cooperation memorandum focused on advanced pesticide spraying technology. Since then, the group has conducted extensive field trials, training programs, and promotions in major agricultural areas. In 2008, the company plans to expand its efforts, organizing more technical seminars and farmer briefings across various provinces. It is expected that over 40,000 agricultural technicians will receive professional training, enhancing their understanding and application of modern pesticide technologies and ultimately benefiting more farmlands and crops.
Momentive’s Silwet product line consists of silicone-based surfactants that improve the performance of agrochemicals. These products enhance adhesion to plant surfaces, improve wetting, and allow faster penetration through leaf pores, making them more resistant to rain wash-off. This superior spreading ability means that less pesticide is needed to achieve optimal coverage and effectiveness, improving both efficiency and reliability in crop protection.
