China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) recently announced the winners of its 2007 Technology Innovation Awards. Among the honored projects was the "Development and First Application of High-pressure Hydrogenation Catalysts for Paraffin Wax and Microcrystalline Wax," developed by the Daqing Chemical Research Center. This project secured the first prize in the Group Corporation's Technology Innovation Award, marking a significant achievement in the field of catalytic technology.
The project focused on the development of advanced catalytic materials, addressing key technical challenges in the production of wax hydrogenation catalysts. By overcoming these obstacles, the team ensured the long-term stability and efficiency of both the catalysts and the production plants. The newly developed SD-1 catalyst was successfully implemented in the 200,000-ton high-pressure wax hydrogenation unit at Fushun Petrochemical Company.
The results have been impressive. The process runs smoothly, with consistent product quality. The final products—paraffin wax and microcrystalline wax—exceed industry standards in terms of light stability, color, thermal resistance, and odor. These improvements meet international requirements for food-grade wax, which is a major milestone for China’s chemical industry.
This breakthrough not only enhances the quality of domestic paraffin wax and microcrystalline wax but also strengthens the competitiveness of Chinese products in the global market. As a result, Fushun Petrochemical Company is expected to generate an annual profit of approximately RMB 16.203 million from this innovation, demonstrating the real-world economic impact of the project.
