The "Butyl Rubber Bromination Reaction Study" project, conducted by the Yanshan Petrochemical Research Institute, recently received approval from Yanshan Petrochemical Company. This marks another significant milestone in the company's ongoing efforts to advance bromobutyl rubber technology, following the successful development of a 30,000-ton-per-year bromobutyl rubber technology package with independent intellectual property rights.
Bromobutyl rubber is a critical raw material used in the production of tubeless radial tire inner liners, especially for vehicles. As China's tire industry continues to grow rapidly, the demand for bromobutyl rubber has surpassed that of regular butyl rubber. However, domestic consumption still relies heavily on imports, with prices currently exceeding 30,000 yuan per ton. Given its superior performance and growing market demand, brominated butyl rubber is considered a key direction for the future development of butyl rubber, offering substantial growth potential.
Recognizing this, Yanshan Petrochemical's research into brominated butyl rubber was included in Sinopec Group's "Ten Major Challenges" initiative during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period. The project aims to establish an industrial-scale production facility, which is expected to be completed and start operations by the end of 2008. This development is not only a technological breakthrough but also a strategic move to reduce reliance on foreign imports and strengthen the domestic chemical industry's competitiveness.
