The "Butyl Rubber Bromination Reaction Study" project conducted by the Yanshan Petrochemical Research Institute recently received approval from Yanshan Petrochemical Company. This marks another significant breakthrough in the company's efforts to advance bromobutyl rubber technology, following the successful development of a 30,000-ton-per-year bromobutyl rubber technology package with independent intellectual property rights.
Bromobutyl rubber is a critical raw material used in the production of tubeless radial tire inner liners. With the rapid growth of China’s tire industry, the demand for bromobutyl rubber has surpassed that of conventional butyl rubber. However, domestic consumption still relies heavily on imports, with prices exceeding 30,000 yuan per ton. As a key innovation in the future development of butyl rubber, brominated butyl rubber holds great market potential. In response to this need, Yanshan Petrochemical’s research on brominated butyl rubber was included in Sinopec Group’s “Ten Major Projects†under the Eleventh Five-Year Plan. The project is expected to be completed and operational by the end of 2008, marking a major step forward in the domestic production of this essential material.
